As soon as I read “…in the crotch…” my first thought was “But that’s not where–” and then I read on to your last sentence. Yep, foolish human indeed!
if it’s in the British Museum, then i saw it as a kid.
the funniest thing about all those imperialist-pillaged ruins was the frieze stolen from the Parthenon. the British Museum had most of it, mounted on the wall, with a drawing of the sections they did not have.
then years later i went to the Louvre, which has all the stuff Napoleon stole. they had the other pieces, the ones the British had drawings of, along with drawings of the pieces they didn’t have because the British had them!
I saw them when I was over there in 1999.
If you follow that link above, it takes you to a politely worded argument on the British Museum’s site for why Athens should not, in fact, get to keep its own art.
I don’t see why they don’t just make a bunch of copies and let everybody have a full set.
